Precision Challenge: Rico 9 year Old Quarter Horse – CCL tear in left stifle

November 2023 Precision Challenge Applicant

Rico is a 9 yr old Quarter horse gelding

What is your Discipline?

Barrel racing

Do you and your horse compete? If so, how often and at what level?

We did compete at the rodeo level 9 months out of the year until his injury 2 yrs ago.

What current issues is your horses suffering from?
Rico was diagnosed with a 99% tear of the cranial cruciate ligament with associated cartilage degeneration and a medial meniscus injury to his left stifle.

What have you tried so far to help your horse with these issues?
I have done PRP, stem cell therapy, multiple feed through supplements and he has been on Previcox daily for the past 2 years.

Has this horse been diagnosed by a Vet?   Yes
If your horse has had injections, when was the last injections and where?

No injections since his last stem cell injection 2 yrs ago.

Is your horse currently on any supplements? If so, which ones?

I have him on a quarter pill of Previcox, MSM, ground flax, organic kelp for magnesium and he gets a selenium supplement daily.

If you are selected for the Precision Challenge, what results are you hoping for?
If I were selected for the challenge, I would love to see if he could be taken off of the Previcox and I would love to be able to trail ride him or do some other low key discipline with him.

Rico began the Precision Challenge on 11/10/2023

3 week check in:
Thank you for checking in! I haven’t experienced any issues feeding the PJS, Rico loves it and licks his grain bucket clean! Last Friday was the 2 week milestone and he is now getting 1 scoop in the evenings since Saturday. Rico seems more bright eyed and his appetite seems to have increased considerably. I am hoping to notice some small physical changes on day 30 which will be December 9th.

6 week Check in:
My gelding has done very well over the past 45 days! A couple things I have noticed is that he will pick up his left lead w/out cross firing more often and he has less drop in his hips at the trot. He is bright eyed and feels great…. he will kick out with both back feet while bucking and playing which is a great thing to see, at the start of his 45 days he would only kick out with his right hind and protect his left hind.

PC Journal Notes:

Week 2:
Seems more bright eyed and eating more.
No changes in movement and mobility

Week 4: (30 days)

Appetite for both hay and grain has increased and seems less nervous.

Seems slightly better on lunge line trotting both directions.

Day 1 of Trial

Day 45 of Trial

There were no changes to feed or medications during this 45 day trial. PJS is fed with a loading dose of 2 scoops for 15 days. On day 16 the daily amount fed was decreased to 1 scoop for the next 30 days.

  1. Do you have samples that I can try on my picky eater? Right stifle. Injected on 6/30/23. 1 Equinoxx daily. Adequan shot every 3 weeks. Has been slowly rehabilitated since. Doing much better but not 100%. Thanks
